Choosing a Wooden Flooring Solution

Wooden flooring is genuine and exclusive, with its natural characteristics contributing to make each and every floor unique.

Because it's a natural product, you will notice lots of quirkiness in a wooden floor, with peculiar knots and grains, eccentric markings and subtle colour variations all adding to its appeal.

Wooden Flooring Construction

We supply two types of wooden flooring; solid wood where each board is a solid piece of wood; and engineered wood, which is manufactured from layers of softwood boards topped with a layer of solid wood and treated to be water resistant.

As well as a difference in price, each floor has slightly different characteristics, so although visually the end result is the same, there are considerations to take into account to choose the right option for your home.

  1. Solid Wood Flooring

Undoubtedly the greatest advantage of solid wood is longevity. It can be revitalised every few years by means of re-sanding, which can be done numerous times, ensuring a solid wood floor will last a lifetime and can look as good as new even decades after installation.

This is however a perk that you pay for up front, as solid wood tends to be amongst the more expensive flooring options.

  2. Engineered Wood Flooring

Engineered wood provides a strong and durable floor as the softwood layers run perpendicular to the length of the top layer of hardwood, giving it additional dimensional strength.

The main disadvantage of engineered wood flooring compared to solid wood is that re-sanding can only be done a few times during its lifetime, depending on the thickness of the top, solid wood layer.

Considerations for Solid Wood Flooring

Wooden floors look stunning throughout the home and work equally well with traditional and contemporary décors. Because of its hardwearing yet flexible and supple characteristics, wood is able to absorb the knocks of family life and retain its good looks, whilst also being easy to keep clean and maintain. Wood is inherently warm and resilient, so makes a great flooring choice in almost any room in the house.

Obviously solid wood flooring cannot be installed in bathrooms or areas of high humidity: as a natural product, it will swell or contract depending on the moisture in the air. Engineered wood however, is treated to avoid this problem, and so stands up well to areas with light moisture, although we would not recommend its use for children's bathrooms which see a lot of splashing!

Wooden Flooring Installation

For best results, wooden flooring should always be professionally installed. Our expert floor fitters have years of experience and know all the pitfalls to avoid, so you don't run into problems such as floor lifting, inconsistent wear or poor finishing round radiators and other fitments.

We leave sufficient room to allow for natural expansion and contraction of the wood and offer a comprehensive guarantee on all of our work on top of the extensive warranty on the products themselves.
